Sir Ben Ainslie was forced to explain a highly dramatic collision in the first day of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers on Bermuda’s Great Sound.

Having already seen some thrilling and action-packed racing in the first five of the six races that were run on day one, particularly from ORACLE TEAM USA who claimed back-to-back wins, the drama really unfolded in the final race of the day between Land Rover BAR and SoftBank Team Japan.

In what proved the biggest flashpoint of the afternoon, both teams were looking for the advantage going into the start box, before the two boats collided at speed, resulting in a penalty being given to Sir Ben Ainslie and the British team. Damage was sustained to both boats, with the Olympic legend’s boat taking on water after the incident.

In scenes similar to the final week of practice racing, in which Land Rover BAR hit Emirates Team New Zealand, Ainslie again found himself having to defend his actions when questioned after racing.

“To be honest, to me it appeared six of one and half a dozen of the other,” said the Land Rover Bar helmsman, whose team suffered defeat in their second race of the day having enjoyed a morale-boosting win over Artemis Racing earlier in the day in race four.

“The collision was obviously unfortunate but these things happen when you are racing these boats.

“You don’t go out there intending to cause damage and so on that front it is was unfortunate to see both boats with damage.

“Unfortunately I’m not a boat builder so I’m not sure about the extent of the damage just yet, but no doubt both shore teams will be working incredibly hard to make sure we are both ready for tomorrow.

“However, for me it was fantastic just to see us competing and up to speed with all of the others. I believe we have silenced a lot of our doubters and I am just incredibly proud of all of our team.”

Meanwhile, SoftBank Team Japan helmsman Dean Barker, whose team suffered defeat to Artemis Racing in their first race of the day, bounced back with victory in race six and was relieved that none of his team had sustained any injuries in the collision with Land Rover BAR.

“We were incredibly lucky that there were no injuries sustained by the guys,” said the New Zealand native. “Maybe they were still in a bit of shock when we started racing but the way they regrouped and got back into things was fantastic.

“Ben has apologised. Clearly it was their mistake because they caused it but it doesn’t stop the guys in the shore team having to have a big workload tonight to put things right.

“You know what is about to happen. You can see it coming in slow motion but there is nothing you can do to stop it.

“What would have been worse is if their boat came a little bit higher over our hull, that would have been really dangerous.

“Fortunately we were able to carry on with the race and limp our way home. The guys did brilliantly to regroup in reply to what happened and get on with the race.

“The first race against Artemis Racing was disappointing. We had good pace and obviously tried hard to keep ahead but ultimately we couldn’t.

“However, what was pleasing was how we bounced back and got that victory in the final race.”

Meanwhile, it proved a highly positive day for the Defenders of the ‘Auld Mug’, ORACLE TEAM USA, who comfortably beat Groupama Team France in the opening race of the afternoon, before coming from behind to overcome Emirates Team New Zealand in what proved the highlight race of the day.

However, despite seeing ORACLE TEAM USA sit joint top of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers standings with three points, alongside Land Rover BAR, skipper Jimmy Spithill was left far from content as he refused to rest on his laurels ahead of day two tomorrow.

“The lads aren’t happy tonight. We can definitely sharpen up a lot ahead of tomorrow,” said the two-time America’s Cup winner.

“Of course it is good to end the first day with two wins from two races but we have got to sharpen up on what we do out there.

“Consistency is the key in a competition like this and so there is a lot for us to improve on.

“However, as I said, it is pleasing that we managed to finish this first day of competition and come away with two race wins.”

Another helmsman who was left with mixed feelings was Artemis Racing’s Nathan Outteridge, having seen his side claim a victory against SoftBank Team Japan, before somewhat surprisingly losing out to Land Rover BAR in race 4.

“It proved a very tiring first day of racing,” said Outteridge.

“Our first race we started slowly but you could see how hard we pushed to get back into the race and when the opportunity came, we took full advantage.

“The second race against Land Rover BAR, we just didn’t get any opportunity to pass them. It was disappointing to lose the race but we will look at ourselves and see what we can do to improve.

“However to get that first win on the board is really important. We had some strong performances in practice racing and so it was great to be able to bring that forward to today and get a first point banked.

“It was also pleasing to win in in the manner in which we did. We kept chipping away, put pressure on SoftBank Team Japan, and then, to get something, that feeling was really good.”

Emirates Team New Zealand helmsman Peter Burling was left satisfied with his team’s showing on the first day, having also taken one win from the day, overcoming Groupama Team France, before losing out to ORACLE TEAM USA in their second race of the day.

“It is really great for us to have got a win on the board,” said the youngest helmsman competing.

“Having taken that win, we always knew it was going to be tough taking on ORACLE TEAM USA. We put up a strong challenge and matched them throughout the race but they just edged us in the end.

“Having lost it late on was a little frustrating but I’m really happy with our first day on the water.

“We’re now excited to get back into action tomorrow and no doubt we’ll be racing hard again.”

Meanwhile, it proved a difficult day for Groupama Team France, who suffered defeats in both their encounters, losing to both ORACLE TEAM USA and Emirates Team New Zealand.

However, having faced two of the highly-fancied teams on the first day, helmsman Franck Cammas is remaining hopeful of an improved showing from the French team in the days to come.

“Today to have our first two matches against teams like ORACLE TEAM USA and Emirates Team New Zealand was a hard way to start the America’s Cup,” said Cammas.

“We knew those teams were among the best teams but we wanted to be closer to them than we were in the end.

“We have to work hard and try and understand why we weren’t fast today. We also need some big improvements in the maneuvers and so there is a lot to work on for us.

“We will try for sure to improve as quickly as possible. Every day is different and so we will see what tomorrow brings.”

In a thrilling winner-take-all final race, Emirates Team New Zealand unhooked itself from a starting buoy to win the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series New York with the high score of 52 points.

Another large crowd, estimated at 100,000, turned out on a sunny day and was treated to some very unpredictable racing. This after over 75,000 came out on Saturday.

No lead was ever safe on Sunday as the wind shifted through wide arcs from the west to the north and ranged anywhere from 5 to 20 knots.

“It was one of those series where everyone had good luck and bad luck, but we got our good luck at the end of the regatta,” said Emirates Team New Zealand skipper Glenn Ashby. “It was exciting and crazy at the same time. Today it was important to keep your cool and stay focused.”

The Kiwi crew, led by Ashby and World Sailor of the year and Red Bull Youth America’s Cup champion helmsman Peter Burling, was literally dead in the water at the start of Race 3. Crewman Blair Tuke had to jump in the water to unhook the starting buoy’s anchor line from the catamaran’s rudder. Making matters worse, the port hull was punctured by the buoy and water was leaking into the hull throughout the race.

“We saw the buoy coming at us with about 20 seconds to go,” said Ashby. “It wasn’t ideal but we were lucky in the end.”

 

The Kiwi crew’s luck came full circle on the next-to-last leg. They rounded the last windward mark in fifth place, about 42 seconds behind leading SoftBank Team Japan. But as all the crews began the downwind leg they sailed into a patch of no wind that engulfed the course.

As the leg was perpendicular to the southerly flowing current, some of the crews were being swept over the course boundary. Land Rover BAR, Groupama Team France and SoftBank Team Japan all were penalized for crossing the boundary in the current.

The Kiwis, further behind, held in the middle of the course and when the wind filled in the Kiwis took off on their hydrofoils at 16 to 20 knots boatspeed, leaving the rest of the fleet gasping in disbelief.

At one point during the final race ORACLE TEAM USA looked to be in position to win. Skipper Jimmy Spithill and crew won the start and led around the first two mark roundings. But Dean Barker’s SoftBank Team Japan grabbed the lead by working the right side of the course while ORACLE TEAM USA struggled on the right side. In the end the reigning America’s Cup champion placed second in the race and second for the series.

“The crowd was insane,” said Spithill. “Today was great for the fans. In these conditions you have to roll with the punches and keep fighting. We wanted to win but we’ll take the second place. The Kiwis got a Hail Mary there at the end, but you have to take your hat off to them and congratulate them.”

Third went to Franck Cammas’ Groupama Team France, winner of Race 2. SoftBank Team Japan placed fourth, Land Rover BAR fifth and Artemis Racing sixth.

Illustrating just how challenging the day was on the short, confined racecourse, Nathan Outteridge’s crew won the first race going away but was then sixth in Races 2 and 3.

“We got a little bit of luck in the first race and managed to hold on, but we had some terrible moments in the last two races…” said Outteridge. “You can’t get people to come watch sailing if you don’t bring it to them. That’s what we’ve done here. When the America’s Cup is in Bermuda next year, in super high-tech boats, we’ll get some amazing racing.”

The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series now moves onto Chicago, June 10-12. After that it heads to Europe for events in the U.K. in July and France in September.

A crowd estimated in excess of 75,000 spectators lined the shoreline of Battery Park City throughout the course of the day on Saturday to watch the return of America’s Cup racing to New York for the first time in nearly 100 years.

The America’s Cup teams worked overtime to reward them and with the window for racing about to close, conditions began to improve and allowed the teams to put on a late show.

ORACLE TEAM USA skipper Jimmy Spithill noted how the “entire foreshore was packed from Tribeca down to Battery Park City. This is the largest crowd I’ve ever seen at a Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series regatta and I hope they come back tomorrow.

“Tomorrow’s the day. It’s going to be windy and these boats are going to be right on the edge. The conditions are setting up to be epic.”

Regatta Director Iain Murray postponed today’s regular racing at 3:20 pm ET when the predicted southeasterly wind failed to materialize on time. The teams bring the athletes and equipment, but Mother Nature determines the playing conditions and today she held out until the last minute.

But Murray was eventually able to bank a “substitute race” during an extended race window to the delight of the fans on site.

Dean Barker led SoftBank Team Japan to its first victory at a Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series regatta in the substitute contest. Should racing be postponed tomorrow, the “substitute race” will slot in and count on the leaderboard.

“It was great we were able to get a race after waiting patiently all day,” said Barker. “The upwind leg was very short because we were sailing with the current and the downwind leg was long because we were sailing into it. The wind wasn’t strong enough to fly a hull, but all in all it was quite a good race.”

Earlier, Murray had attempted to start racing on three different occasions, but the light wind conditions, less than 5 knots, coupled with a strong southerly flowing current prevented each opportunity.

 

“Today was a tricky day because we were waiting for the wind to swing around to the southeast,” explained Emirates Team New Zealand skipper Glenn Ashby. “It did later in the day but only after the window for regular racing had expired.”

Based on the forecast for “epic” conditions, the substitute race is unlikely to be included in the overall standings. Blustery northwest winds between 17 and 24 knots are expected to build in the wake of a cold front scheduled to pass over the region tomorrow morning.

Three races are planned beginning at 2:00 pm. Each race will be a double-points race, meaning 1st place earns 20 points, 2nd place 18 points, 3rd place 16 points and so on.

The upper wind limit is 25 knots over a 5-minute average, but that shouldn’t be a factor.

“Some locations are trickier to get racing than others,” Ashby said. “Seeing the amount of people on the edge of the water, there’s obviously plenty of interest in the sport. If we get the wind we have in the forecast tomorrow, we’ll really be able to show what the boats can do.”

The AC Endeavour Program has created a weekend of educational fun for New York area youth programs, sailing schools, and fans of all ages visiting the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series New York. Friday, May 6, has been designated AC Endeavour Youth Day, and activities from local community partners will engage kids in the Event Village at Brookfield Place Waterfront Plaza during the weekend of racing, May 7-8.

AC Endeavour has been operating in Bermuda, host venue for the 2017 America’s Cup, since last year, introducing technical concepts of sailing to school curriculum, as well as teaching water safety and other life skills. Now the program is coming to New York. Area students will participate in STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math – education, then put those learnings into practice on the Hudson River in AC Endeavour boats.

“Sailing is the ultimate tool for delivering STEAM curriculum. From learning about buoyancy and wind currents to conservation and teamwork, the sport provides a unique educational experience,” said Tom Herbert-Evans, Community Sailing Program Manager for the America’s Cup. “We’re excited to bring AC Endeavour and this curriculum to young people in New York. With the support of Harken, North Sails and Magic Marine, along with local community partners, we have the opportunity to engage and inspire students in a hands-on learning environment.”

AC Endeavour Youth Day

On Friday, 100 students ages 13 years and older from around the New York City area will participate in AC Endeavour Youth Day as part of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series New York. Students representing the New York Harbor School, Success Academy and nearby Battery Park City area schools will be part of a special STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) education program and experience sailing taster sessions in Hobie Wave boats on the Hudson River.

Students will begin their day with a combination of interactive activities both on shore and on the water. On shore in the Event Village, they’ll test their strength and knowledge with the Harken Grinder Challenge and Simple Machine Scavenger Hunt. Both activities will take place in the Harken STEAM Classroom supported by the US Sailing Reach Initiative. In the classroom, they can also learn about marine debris and how to live sustainably with help from the Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean.

On the Hudson River, the students will take out the fleet of eight uniquely identifiable Hobie Wave catamarans. The boats feature bright yellow sails – donated by leading sailmaker North Sails – and branding to reflect the iconic New York taxi cab. Following the weekend AC Endeavour programs, the Hobie Waves will be donated to local youth sailing programs, along with legacy funding to help run the programs going forward.

Mid-day on Friday, students will trade in their Magic Marine helmets, lifejackets, and drysuits for lunch aboard the boat Valiant to watch the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series practice races. STEAM activities held onboard Valiant will feature representatives from Hobie Cat and North U who will educate students on everything from sail trim to foiling technique. A fun AC45 race boat design competition will also allow students to learn first-hand about the innovative design and cutting edge technology pivotal to the America’s Cup.

Following racing, participants will have the opportunity to meet and interact with America’s Cup sailors from all six teams. The entire group of students, along with the sailors, will participate in a special Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series New York ribbon cutting to officially open the Event Village and kick off the weekend activities.

When the Event Village officially opens at 3 pm, the students will rotate between exploring the wide range of community educational exhibits and a second sailing session on Colgate 26 boats with the Offshore Sailing School.

Weekend Programs

On Saturday, May 7, and Sunday, May 8, Rocking the Boat and Hudson River Community Sailing, both partners of the AC Endeavour Program for the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series New York, will each bring a group of youth participants sailing on the Hobie Wave catamarans on the Hudson River. The kids will also join an AC Sailor Lifestyle Talk to learn more about what it’s like to be part of an America’s Cup team. Both groups will participate in Harken STEAM Classroom and Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean activities, and they will join local youth sailors to be part of the Dock Out Shows.

Visitors of all ages can stop by the Harken STEAM Classroom all weekend to participate in the Harken Grinder Challenge and Simple Machines Scavenger Hunt.

Local community partners will also offer educational opportunities for all young visitors throughout the day in the Event Village, open from 11:00 am – 6:00 pm both Saturday, May 7, and Sunday, May 8.

Community partner exhibitions include hands-on activities focused around STEAM curriculum, from learning about weather to points of sail. All exhibitors will also have information on youth and community sailing programs. The organizations represented:

#SayNo Sustainability Activities

In conjunction with the Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean, the #SayNo photo booth and sustainability programs will educate children about marine debris and ways to protect the oceans. At the photo booth, all visitors can snap photos, tagging them with the hashtag #SayNo, and sharing their commitment to help eliminate single-use plastics and keep the oceans clean. The Rozalia Project will also lead a fun beach clean and recycling activity throughout the weekend in the Event Village. All visitors are encouraged to stop by for the opportunity to win a prize.

All AC Endeavour Program participants will receive a reusable water bottle, and water refill stations will be located in the Event Village. In the Harken STEAM Classroom, students will also participate in a sustainability activity – “Reducing a Sailor’s Environmental Impact – Start with Lunch” – facilitated by the US Sailing Reach Program.

Ben Ainslie, the most decorated Olympic sailor in history, led his Land Rover BAR team to victory at the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series in Oman this weekend.

Ainslie beat his former skipper, Jimmy Spithill and ORACLE TEAM USA, by two points, with the winning margin secured on a late charge in the final race.

Ainslie says winning the event in Oman was an important measuring stick for the team, which hadn’t won since securing victory on home waters in Portsmouth last summer.

“We kept fighting through today,” he said. “Compared to the teams with established track records, we need to prove we can compete at the top of the fleet and I think we are getting back to doing that. We have a big team of designers, boat builders and support staff back at home working very hard for us and they want to know that we can win this thing.”

For ORACLE TEAM USA the second place result was a fourth consecutive podium finish in a Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series regatta. But for all that, the team has yet to win.

“We’ve made some good steps forward, but we need to get going,” Spithill said after racing. “It’s good to be on the podium. We’re one of only two teams to have been on the podium at each event. But we want to win. There’s no two ways about it.”

With a third place result in Oman, Emirates Team New Zealand retains its place atop the overall Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series leaderboard, but ORACLE TEAM USA, in second place, has closed the gap to just 6 points.

“The last race was a little bit disappointing for us,” said skipper Glenn Ashby, referring to a fifth place finish. “But to come away from any event still holding the overall lead is a good thing. At the end of the day that’s what counts.”

Ashby is right. The leader at the conclusion of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series will carry two bonus points forward into the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers in May 2017 in Bermuda. The second place team earns one bonus point.

A popular result on Sunday came from Groupama Team France, who finished strongly with a second place finish followed by a victory. With Adam Minoprio replacing the injured Franck Cammas on the helm this weekend, the team converted two strong start line performances into top finishes.

“We were pretty stoked on board. You could see the excitement on the guys faces,” Minoprio said. “We didn’t have the strongest start to the regatta but we’re happy to have been improving through the weekend and finishing with a win.”

Both SoftBank Team Japan and Artemis Racing continued to show moments of promised but fell back in the fleet over the course of the day; bad breaks combined with poor decisions or handling errors to put the pair at the bottom of the table.

The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Oman marked the first America’s Cup sailing in the Middle East and was a milestone event for the host, Oman Sail.

“This was a fantastic weekend for us,” said David Graham, the CEO of Oman Sail. “Promoting Oman through the America’s Cup broadcast was a fantastic opportunity for us.

“It was also tremendous to see the integration of our youth sailing programs with AC Endeavour. And I think perhaps most significant for me was how the Omanis on our team led the charge and delivered a fantastic event.

“The feedback from our guests, our partners, and all of the visitors who came to enjoy the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Oman has been extremely positive. Let’s do it again!”

The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series is coming to New York on May 7-8, 2016.

This marks the first America’s Cup racing in New York in nearly 100 years.

Skipper Jimmy Spithill is bringing his ORACLE TEAM USA, defending champions of the America’s Cup, to race on home waters in the United States for the first time in this Cup cycle.

Emirates Team New Zealand, with World Sailors of the Year Peter Burling and Blair Tuke on board, is at the top of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series leaderboard, with Spithill’s ORACLE TEAM USA in second place. Land Rover BAR won the first event of 2016 in Oman in February to pull within one point.

About the America’s Cup

The America’s Cup is the oldest trophy in international sport, dating back to 1851, when the yacht America, after which the trophy is named, beat the best of the British fleet in a race around the Isle of Wight, U.K. The trophy won on that day was donated in trust through a Deed of Gift and has since become a symbol of immense achievement. It is perhaps the hardest trophy in sport to win. In it’s 165-year history, only four countries have managed to win the America’s Cup.

America’s Cup racing will return to New York for the first time since 1920 with Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series racing on May 7-8, 2016.

The New York event is one of six events planned during 2016, each featuring thrilling, high-speed competition, as six America’s Cup teams, with the top sailors in the world, vie for points that count towards the final competition for the 35th America’s Cup in 2017.

This year, Emirates Team New Zealand’s star helmsman, Peter Burling, the youngest in the fleet, led his team to the top of the standings over current America’s Cup champion Jimmy Spithill’s ORACLE TEAM USA, and the highly touted Land Rover BAR team led by Olympic hero Ben Ainslie.

But the competition was close. In fact, the opening three Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series events in 2015 featured three different event winners, and four different individual race winners. The 2016 calendar promises more hard-fought racing on the foiling AC45F catamarans that fly above the water.

“Everyone is going to want to start the New Year off well,” said ORACLE TEAM USA skipper Jimmy Spithill. “But all the other teams have been out training with the same goal in mind, so nothing will come easy this year.

“The New York event is going to be spectacular. Racing on the lower Hudson River, in front of that Manhattan skyline, will be a huge hit. New Yorkers are massive sports fans and I think this will be something very special: thrilling, top-level racing right in the heart of the city. It’s going to be a great event for the America’s Cup and a great event for New York.”

Practice racing in New York is on May 6, with point-scoring races on the weekend of May 7-8.

Four events on the 2016 schedule have been announced to date:

Muscat, Oman – February 26-28, 2016; 
New York, USA – May 6-8, 2016;
Chicago, USA – June 10-12, 2016;
Portsmouth, UK – July 22-24, 2016;

Two additional Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series events are anticipated to complete the calendar, likely in Europe in mid-September and in Asia in mid-November.

“With six events around the world in 2016 our fans will have more opportunities to enjoy America’s Cup racing and follow their favorite teams and sailors as we build towards the finals in Bermuda in 2017,” said Harvey Schiller, the Commercial Commissioner of the America’s Cup.

“We’re excited to be able to add the new venues of Oman, New York and Chicago to the calendar, giving more fans a chance to experience the America’s Cup in person.”

The New York event is an historic milestone of sorts. America’s Cup racing was held in New York harbor and environs for 50 years, representing the first 13 challenges for the oldest trophy in international sport.

From 1870 through 1920 racing took place off New York. Beginning in 1930, the competition was moved to Newport, Rhode Island, where it remained until the United States finally lost the Cup in 1983, ending the longest winning streak in sport.

Since that time, racing for the America’s Cup has taken place in Perth (Australia); San Diego (USA); Auckland (New Zealand); Valencia (Spain); and San Francisco (USA).

In May/June 2017, the next America’s Cup will be raced for in Bermuda.

This event will take place from May 6-8, 2016, with official practice racing on the Friday and point-scoring races on Saturday and Sunday.

The Event Village will be in the Brookfield Place Waterfront Plaza, while the racing will be on the lower Hudson River off the Battery Park City Esplanade (between the Pier 25 basin to the north and The Battery to the south).

The technical areas for teams, race management and America’s Cup TV production will be based at Liberty State Park and Liberty Landing Marina, across the Hudson River in New Jersey.

The majesty of the J Class era will return to the America’s Cup eighty years after the class last raced for the oldest trophy in international sport.

The J Class Association (JCA) and the America’s Cup Event Authority have agreed to stage a J Class regatta in Bermuda in June 2017 between the conclusion of the America’s Cup Challenger Playoffs and the America’s Cup Match.

“The J Class era of the America’s Cup is widely recognized as being among the high points in Cup history,” said Russell Coutts, director of the America’s Cup Event Authority (ACEA).

“When racing for the America’s Cup in the 1930s, the J Class boats embodied grace and power with cutting-edge design and engineering. Having the J Class join us in Bermuda will create a spectacular blend between the old and new.”

The J Class boats will be moored in the America’s Cup Village in Dockyard at Bermuda, providing as elegant a sight at rest as their beauty and power are impressive under sail.

Louise Morton from the J Class Association (JCA), commented: “The America’s Cup organizers have offered the J Class a unique opportunity to be part of the America’s Cup for the first time in eighty years. On behalf of the Owners, Captains and crew, we are delighted to be part of this spectacular event.”

Racing in the J Class regatta will be organized by the America’s Cup race management team with the final two days of racing expected to straddle the opening weekend of the America’s Cup Match.

The current J Class fleet comprises seven boats, including three original Js, two of which raced for the America’s Cup. The seven J Class boats currently sailing are: Endeavour, Hanuman, Lionheart, Rainbow, Ranger, Shamrock V, Velsheda. An eighth J Class yacht is expected to be launched in May 2015.
