For the second year running, the Candy Store Cup Superyacht Edition will showcase some of the world’s most spectacular yachts racing in a regatta designed specifically for them. The event, scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, July 27-29, is organized and hosted by Newport Shipyard and Bannister’s Wharf, which partnered last year to consolidate the Newport Bucket and Candy Store Cup regattas.

The largest yacht entered thus far is the 184’ (56m) Perini Navi ketch Zenji, which will join the other entries at Newport Shipyard’s newly expanded docks alongside dozens of other megayachts, both sail and power. The working shipyard has become the epicenter of the megayacht industry in New England and is uniquely positioned on the Newport waterfront to allow the public to view the yachts that are berthed there.

 

The Candy Store Cup is all about sportsmanship and camaraderie, as the pristine superyachts must race to rules specially formulated to keep them safe distances from each other. The format calls for pursuit-style (staggered start) racing on Rhode Island Sound, with one race planned for each of the three days, leaving plenty of time in the afternoons and evenings for socializing. Racing begins at 1 p.m. off Castle Hill and will provide a stunning visual for those watching from vantage points along the shore of Narragansett Bay’s East Passage, south of the Pell Bridge. The Candy Store Cup Party and Awards are on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Newport Shipyard, one of the most popular and recommended shipyards in the U.S., is a full-service marina and shipyard with over 3,500 linear feet of dock space that can accommodate yachts up to 300+ feet. Its amenities include a dockside café, ship store, fitness center, courtesy vehicles and crew housing. Bannister’s Wharf, founder of the original Candy Store Cup in 1977, is situated in downtown Newport and attracts visitors and locals alike with 20 shops and galleries that offer a diverse selection of life’s niceties. The social center of the Wharf is the Clarke Cooke House, home of the original Candy Store Cup.

Mohegan Sun kicked off it’s Barrett-Jackson Northeast with a Preview Day and Automobilia Auction. The crowds were beginning to gather and gaze at the tents and garage filling up with vintage autos, hot rods, and pretty much something to match the expectations of most auto and truck enthusiasts.

The 2nd Annual Barrett-Jackson Northeast Auction returns this week, June 21-24, at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions® will once again offer a full schedule of events, including a variety of family festivities. The excitement continues Thursday through Saturday with the collector car auction, featuring a sold-out docket for the second year in a row.

There was a Ford & Chevrolet Ride’ N Drive and Dodge Thrill Rides for those game to ride and drive the track burning rubber and drifting around the corners of the specially set up track in the side lot of Mohegan Sun in view of the spectators.

 

There were custom made metal sculptures by Bill Secunda Studios placed among the custom autos and 4×4’s located between the tents.

In the auction arena, the first of more than 650 pieces of authentic automobilia made their way to the famous Barrett-Jackson stage, many of them – including a vast selection of pristine diecast model cars – hailing from the Cedarmore Collection. Among the top-selling automobilia items today were a large HC Sinclair Gasoline double-sided porcelain service station sign from the 1930s-40s (Lot #6312), a beautiful 1940s Gulf Oil Premium Gasoline Gilbarco model 98 restored service station gas pump (Lot #6260) and a Pennzoil Gasoline Bennett model #766 restored service station gas pump from the early 1950s (Lot #6310).

Barrett-Jackson kicked off it’s newest auction for The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions® at the sold out The Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Also, Barrett-Jackson set an attendance record for any event at Mohegan Sun.

“The inaugural Barrett-Jackson Northeast Auction became a success within the first few hours with record crowds and an unprecedented sell-out of both tickets and consignments,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “This will be absolutely the best collector car event in the Northeast in 2016.”

Mohegan Sun, one of the most spectacular entertainment, gaming, dining and shopping destinations in North America, hosted the three-day collector car auction event for visitors from around the world. Coverage of the inaugural Northeast Auction presented by Barrett-Jackson was broadcast live on the Velocity and Discovery television networks as well.

The first Northeast Barrett-Jackson exceeded expectation and the sale achieved $30,378,920 in total sales, and 574 vehicles sold for an average price of $52,925.  Not bad for it’s first year in New England.

Top sale of the weekend was a 1969 L88 Corvette at $624,800. Big sales in the American muscle category included a 1969 Boss 429 Mustang at $346,500, a 1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird at $330,000 and a 1968 Shelby GT500 KR Convertible at $203,500. Barrett-Jackson had numerous Italian cars in the lineup, including several 1990s Lamborghinis and 1980s Ferraris. The most expensive of them were the 1998 Lamborghini Diablo SV Monterey Edition at $253,000 and the 1967 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2, a two-headlight car, at $330,000. This being a mostly no reserve Barrett-Jackson sale, there were only a handful of no-sales.

The Mohegan Sun arena was full of both bidders and spectators. During one part of the sale there were so many bidders in attendance they spilled over into the spectator portion of the arena making it even more interesting to watch the fast paced bidding.

There were vintage hot rods and old army vehicles as well. The auction had a wide array of memorabilia ranging from gas pumps and old signage to bicycles and pedal cars. So even if you were not in the market for a Lamborghini there were plenty of items to bid on.

Many in the crowd did not even come to bid but to stroll the giant tented parking lots of Mohegan Sun and take in the best car show around. There were classics, exotics, muscle cars, hot rods for everyone’s taste. There were one offs and show cars like the Shelby all polished aluminum shining in the sun.  Many of these cars you won’t see at any other show in the Northeast and the crowds seem to appreciate all of them judging by the spectators flocking from tent to tent and milling through the parking garage filled with both flesh and steel.

NEWPORT, R.I. (April 13, 2015) – This summer, Churchill Yacht Partners’ 116-foot sailing yacht Whisper will be giving back to the New England region in which she charters by donating a portion of her season’s sales to Project Puffin, an organization that protects the rare seabirds and their historic nesting islands off the coast of Maine. Started by the National Audubon Society in 1973, the project is designed to restore the puffin population and educate people on the plethora of environmental issues that are threatening the seabird and could, in turn, lead to their endangerment.

“New England is a prime destination for chartering which is largely due to the fact that people love its scenic charm and natural allure,” said Whisper’s Charter Manager at Churchill Yachts, Kaisa Pace (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). “If we don’t protect the region’s environment and its wildlife, then there is no saying what will happen to its beautiful coastline. Newport, Rhode Island – 5 February 2013 – Newport, Rhode Island will host the Volvo Ocean Race for the first time after winning a place on the route for the 12th edition of sailing’s premier round-the-world challenge in 2014-15.

The Race will reach Newport, one of the world’s sailing capitals, around May 2015 after a stop in Itajaí, Brazil. From Newport, the teams will sail across the Atlantic for the final legs around Europe.

The Volvo Ocean Race has visited the United States in every edition since 1989-90 but despite Newport’s great sailing heritage, it has never before had Host Port status.

“I’m delighted to announce that we are bringing the world’s greatest offshore sailing event to one of the world’s great sailing cities,” Volvo Ocean Race CEO Knut Frostad. said at a presentation at Rhode Island State House in Providence.

“It’s about time the Race came to the city of Newport and we are looking forward to a real festival that will delight and inspire sailing fans and those who are new to the sport.”

Rhode Island is known as the Ocean State and for over 50 years Newport was the home of the America’s Cup. The city hosted a hugely successful stop on the America’s Cup World Series in 2012, with 65,000 people visiting over the four-day racing period.

Frostad was joined at the presentation by Rhode Island Governor Lincoln D. Chafee, Newport Mayor Harry Winthrop, Sail Newport executive director Brad Read and other local and state officials. Volvo Ocean Race COO Tom Touber was also at the presentation.

“It gives me great pleasure and pride to welcome the Volvo Ocean Race to beautiful Rhode Island for the first time,” said Governor Chafee. “We have made significant strategic land and marine infrastructure improvements at Fort Adams State Park, paving the way for a new era of racing in Rhode Island and setting the stage for the world-class events we continue to host.

“We had a positive experience with the America’s Cup World Series last summer, and I look forward to welcoming the Volvo Ocean Race to Rhode Island. These large-scale sailing events draw impressive numbers of visitors to our state – visitors who make valuable contributions to our economy.”

Newport, a popular tourist destination, is the sixth Host Port for the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 to be revealed so far. The Race will start in Alicante, Spain and visit Recife in north east Brazil. Later in the Race, the teams will race to Auckland in New Zealand before rounding Cape Horn and making a second Brazilian stop in Itajaí and then heading to Newport.

The Race will finish in the Swedish city of Gothenburg. The remaining stopovers on the 2014-15 route will be revealed over the coming weeks.

The upcoming edition of the Volvo Ocean Race will start in autumn 2014 and will be the 12th edition of the 40-year-old event, which started in 1973 as the Whitbread Round the World Race.
The next two editions of the Volvo Ocean Race will be contested in a new high-performance yacht, the Volvo Ocean 65, designed by Farr Yacht Design in the United States and built by a consortium of boatyards in the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Switzerland.
The new 65-foot (19.8-metre) monohull racing yachts will be strictly One Design and delivered “ready to sail”. The boats incorporate the latest video, satellite and content production facilities to further enhance the Onboard Reporter programme that has been in place since 2008-09.
The all-female Team SCA were the first to announce their participation in the 2014-15 edition. Backed by SCA, the global hygiene and forest products company, they will be the first all-women’s team to compete in the race since 2001-02. A team from the state of Pernambuco, Brazil has also been announced.
The previous edition of the Volvo Ocean Race started in October 2011 in Alicante, Spain and was won by Groupama sailing team, skippered by Frenchman Franck Cammas.
The last race took the teams over 39,000 nautical miles (45,000 miles or 72,000 kilometres) and started in Alicante. The route featured stopovers in Cape Town (South Africa), Abu Dhabi (UAE), Sanya (China), Auckland (New Zealand), Itajaí (Brazil), Miami (USA), Lisbon (Portugal) and Lorient (France) before the finish in Galway (Ireland).

The Newport Yachting Center will be decorated with a collection of world-class yachts for the 30th Annual Newport Charter Yacht Show (June 18-21), which has garnered great enthusiasm from the marine industry under the show’s new owner, Newport Harbor Corporation. The four-day show, which will take place in historic downtown Newport, R.I., is the only one of its kind in the U.S. and caters to not only the charter trade but also consumers (attending with brokers) who can learn more about charter options in New England and world-wide through access to luxury yachts from 50 to 200 feet, industry focused seminars and ancillary goods and services.

 

“We have 24 yachts signed up to-date, and our number of on-site exhibitors has doubled from last year,” said Event Chair and Director of Newport Exhibition Group Tom DeLotto, adding that this year the show is directly preceding the America’s Cup World Series in Newport. “Everything is really coming together, and we could not be more pleased with the industry support from brokers, agents and marine businesses.”

 

Nicholson Yachts is one of the local firms that will be participating this year and currently has five yachts registered to appear at the show. “I’ve seen so many positive changes already, “said Owner and President of Nicholson Yachts Karen Kelly-Shea (Newport, R.I.) who has participated in the show since 1992. “The Newport Yachting Center is a great venue for the yachts and the perfect showcase for ‘selling’ charters starting in Newport, the sailing capital of New England.”  Kelly-Shea explained that seminars at the show will focus on chartering in New England as an exciting, budget-conscious option to the Mediterranean and Caribbean.

 

“Having the show in Newport with tourism representatives from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Maine will help brokers from other parts of the country book summer charters,” said Kelly-Shea. “As far as local support goes, local charter brokers I’ve talked with are very positive about the changes, and the list of exhibiting vendors includes some of the best marine businesses on Aquidneck Island. After the show finishes I look forward to lots of emails and phone calls from brokers ready to book yachts in Nicholson’s charter fleet!”

 

Delotto added that the cost for a week-long charter in New England can be as low as $8000 for three couples.  “You don’t have to charter a mega yacht for $100,000, though we do represent those options at the show.  Brokers have all sorts of options, including vacations on charter yachts in the 40-50 foot range.”

 

Rikki Davis Yachts at Churchill Yacht Partners has five yachts listed in the show this year. “The main benefit of having the show in Newport is the experience the brokers get from being in this great city where they can glean first-hand knowledge of the location they will be selling to their charter clients,” said Maggie Vale (Newport, R.I.), a charter yacht broker for the company, who has been attending the Newport show for the past eight years. “In this industry we are selling a location as well as a product.”

 

DeLotto said that the supporting marine businesses, which include Gold Sponsors AERE’ Docking Solutions and The Private Journey, are “extremely vested” in the event.  The week kicks off with a Welcome Cocktail Reception, sponsored by The Hinckley Company and IGY Marinas (Monday, June 18 at 5:30 p.m.), in the Hospitality Tent (open daily from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.), which is sponsored by West Marine Megayacht Supply, and starting off each day of the show are the industry-focused seminars (8:15 a.m.) sponsored by ClearStone Coating.”

Spotlight:  Culinary Competition

Chefs aboard participating charter yachts will go whisk-to-whisk on Wednesday, June 20 for the Newport Charter Yacht Show’s Culinary Competition, which has been split into two classes: the Grande Class, for chefs on yachts 100 feet and above, and the Premier Class, for chefs on yachts 99 feet and under.

For the Grande Class, the morning of the event, chefs will be provided with a “mystery basket” full of ingredients along with a short list of ingredients that can be used from their pantries. They will then return to their respective galleys to prepare four servings of a meal of any cuisine, and local restaurant chefs will determine a winner.

For the Premier Class, the chefs will prepare seafood chowder, the quintessential dish of New England and have free reign over the ingredient choices. Once the dishes are complete, show attendees will be invited to visit every competing yacht’s galley to taste the creations. Ballots will be provided onboard each yacht and the winner determined after results are tallied.

 

The winner of both the Grande and Premier Class will be announced at the Chef’s Awards Ceremony in the main tent that day at 4 p.m.
