Just 75 miles from the North West coast of New Zealand’s South Island the crew of Musandam are hoping, for the first time in 24 days, to see land. Reaching in an average of 26-28 knots of breeze overnight they have done a great job of making the best of the current winds however they are now beginning to slow as winds diminish. As Charlie writes this morning “Our manic push to be ahead of the high pressure is over, the wind has started to ease – now down to 18kts from a peak of nearly 30.” Tactics now are to head closer into shore to try and take advantage of thermal influence of land to sneak the final 110 miles to the headland of Cook Strait. “We are all rather hoping to be able to see the coastline, however the sun is well over the yard arm here, and it’ll be dark in 5 hours – so it’s going to be close if we see land before dusk” Watch the video from on board today
