Rozalia Project believes we CAN clean the ocean. But, not by trying to implement solutions thousands of miles away in the centers of our ocean gyres. Rozalia Project believes that the vast majority of the problem of marine debris and its solutions are here – in our urban and coastal waters.
Eighty percent of marine debris comes from land and the majority of that from areas of urban sprawl. All of this trash has created three new oceanographic features in our urban and coastal waters.
Beer can reefs are the first… can you guess the others? Watch Rozalia Project co-founder, Rachael Miller’s TEDx talk to learn what other features marine debris is making in our urban and coastal waters as well as learn about our solutions and why we are optimistic!
Innovation will restore our ocean – Welcome to Expedition RESTORE
As you read this, Rachael and a team of interns, guest scientists and crew members, are preparing to depart on American Promise. Expedition RESTORE starts today!
Our goals for this expedition are to develop and test innovative ways to restore our ocean by eradicating these new oceanographic features and help prevent them in the first place.
During Expedition RESTORE, we will:
- Continue R&D on the Baleen Basker – our low by-catch marine debris net that will leave organic matter in the ocean and recover the floating trash – especially in coastal marine protected areas (where whales+ feed)!
- Refine using a drone to help with litter surveys, making shoreline restoration more efficient
- Test new education techniques with people of all ages to see what will inspire them (and you)
- Launch/conduct 3 research projects that will: investigate the relationship between marine debris and aquatic invasive species; explore the possibility of microplastic entering the human chain via lobster and test a modeling program to determine areas of increased debris accumulation in the Gulf of Maine
