Sail 250 is a nationwide maritime celebration marking America’s 250th anniversary, featuring over 60 tall ships from 20 nations, public tours, parades, and cultural festivities across multiple U.S. port cities.

Sail 250 is part of the America 250 celebrations, commemorating the United States’ Semiquincentennial with a global gathering of tall ships and naval vessels. The event combines maritime heritage, cultural programming, and public engagement, offering visitors the chance to tour historic ships, watch parades, and enjoy fireworks and family activities sail4th.org+2.

The International Parade of Sail will feature tall ships from 20 foreign nations sailing past an anchored fleet of allied and U.S. naval vessels. The parade route extends from the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, past the Statue of Liberty and up the Hudson River to the George Washington Bridge. USCGC Eagle will lead the procession.

The flotilla includes iconic vessels such as:

  • USCG Barque Eagle – the only active square-rigged U.S. government ship, serving as a training vessel 
  • CNS Esmeralda (Chile) – a four-masted barquentine, known as “La Dama Blanca” 
  • BAP Unión (Peru) – the largest sail training vessel in Latin America 
  • ARC Gloria (Colombia) – three-masted barque and flagship of the Colombian Navy 
  • ARA Libertad (Argentina) – 340-foot, three-masted steel-hulled tall ship 
  • Gorch Fock (Germany), Amerigo Vespucci (Italy), HSwMS Gladan (Sweden), and others from over 20 nations 

There will be events all weekend and plenty of activities to join in throughout the waterfront.

  • Ship Tours: Free public boarding is available at most ships, with general tours running 10 AM – 6 PM in New York 
  • Parades & Fireworks: Spectacular parades of sail, water cannon salutes, and fireworks displays are scheduled
  • Family & Cultural Activities: Educational programs, seafood cook-offs, sports days, and interactive experiences are offered to engage visitors of all ages.
  • Over 60 tall ships from 20 nations and additional U.S. and allied naval vessels participate in the event
  • The event is expected to attract millions of spectators, particularly in New York and New Jersey.
  • Sail 250 combines maritime tradition, international goodwill, and public celebration, making it a once-in-a-generation experience.

Massive sailing ships, including Italy’s three-masted, 329-foot Amerigo Vespucci and Spain’s four-masted, 371-foot Juan Sebastian de Elcano, will fill New York City harbor for the United States’ 250th anniversary, parading up the Hudson River to the George Washington Bridge for Fourth of July weekend.
